How to Keep Carpet Clean
3 easy steps to keep it clean. Have a weird spill? Use our calculator for custom instructions
Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum!
This is the most important step to carpet care. Frequent vacuuming stops soil from working its way below the surface of the carpet pile where it is far more difficult to remove and can damage the carpet fibers. Read more below.
Blot Spills Immediately
Prompt attention to spots and spills is essential. Always blot your carpet, never rub or scrub abrasively, this can fray the carpet's fibers.
Use Recommended Cleaners
While many carpets are stain resistant, no carpet is completely stain proof! As a leading carpet manufacturer, you can trust our proven carpet cleaner.

Care Routines
By following this maintenance plan, you can keep your carpets looking and performing their best for years to come.
Daily
- Spot Cleaning: Use our Spill Calculator to search for specific spills. Immediately blot spills with a clean, white, absorbent cloth or paper towel. Use a Shaw Floors approved carpet cleaner.
- High Traffic Areas: Perform quick visual checks of high traffic areas for any new spills or debris. Vacuum the carpet traffic lanes daily to extend the life of your carpet.
Weekly
- Vacuuming: Vacuum all carpeted areas thoroughly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush or beater bar. Adjust the vacuum height to match the carpet pile.
- Edge Cleaning: Use the vacuum's edge tool to clean along baseboards and in corners where soil tends to settle and collect.
Occasionally
- Professional Cleaning: Schedule a professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on traffic.
- Deep Stain Removal: If there are any deep stains that regular spot cleaning cannot remove, consult a professional carpet cleaner.
- Matting Prevention: Move furniture periodically to prevent matting in high-traffic areas and use carpet protectors under heavy furniture legs.
Extend the Life of Your Carpet
Easy, proactive steps will keep your carpet looking good over time.
- Invest in a quality vacuum certified through the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval/Green Label Vacuum Cleaner Program. Use slow, overlapping strokes and pay extra attention to areas with heavy foot traffic.
- For most carpet styles, use a vacuum with a rotating brush or combination beater/brush bar that agitates the carpet pile and mechanically loosens soil. Test the beater/brush bar in an inconspicuous location before regular use to make sure it doesn't produce excessive fuzzing.
- For shag styled carpets with longer yarns use suction-only vacuum or a vacuum with an adjustable brush lifted away from the carpet so the fibers do not wrap around a rotating brush.
